Algeria faces declining marriage, fertility rates

Algerian society is undergoing significant shifts, with fewer and later marriages and motherhood losing priority, official data shows. Marriage rates have steadily declined since 2014, when they peaked at 10 per 1,000 people, amid tough economic and social conditions. Algeria’s population hit 47 million in July 2025, with 29% under 15, 59% aged 15-59, and 11% over 60, according to the Ministry of Health and Population. Sociologists attribute the trend to changing family dynamics.
