Algeria has issued two arrest warrants for French Algerian writer Kamel Daoud, France’s foreign ministry said Wednesday, amid rising tensions. Ministry spokesman Christophe Lemoine confirmed Algeria’s judiciary notified France, adding Paris is "closely monitoring" the situation. Daoud, a 2024 Prix Goncourt winner for his banned novel Houris—set during Algeria’s 1990s civil war—denies basing his protagonist on survivor Saada Arbane, who claims otherwise. France reiterated support for free expression, calling Daoud "renowned and respected."
