Algeria is likely the first international buyer of Russia’s Su-57E stealth fighter, following an announcement by Rosoboronexport at Airshow China 2024, according to a report in Global Defense News. Russia revealed it had secured an international buyer for its fifth-generation fighter but declined to disclose the customer's identity. Informed observers say Algeria’s long-standing defense ties with Russia and its focus on military modernization make it a strong candidate.
The Algerian Air Force already operates advanced Russian aircraft, including Su-30MKAs and MiG-29s, and has acquired S-400 air defense systems, underscoring its reliance on Russian technology.
The Su-57, equipped with stealth features, advanced avionics, and multi-role capabilities, has been combat-tested in Syria and Ukraine. For Algeria, acquiring this fifth-generation fighter would bolster its air superiority and counterbalance Morocco’s U.S.-supplied F-16s.
If confirmed, this deal would mark a milestone for Russia’s defense exports and potentially shift the military balance in North Africa.
