Algeria sends back 16,000 illegal migrants to Niger
Human Rights Watch / NGO calls for "the immediate halt of roundups and mass expulsions" by Algeria, saying migrants' rights being violated

Algeria has pushed back more than 16,000 irregular African migrants to Niger since April; per an official source speaking to AFP Wednesday. Expulsions during May and April account for more than half of the 31,000 migrants which Algiers kicked out in the whole of 2024, often in "brutal conditions," according to local NGO Alarm Phone Sahara.  Niger’s interior minister, General Mohamed Toumba, has said the pushback in migrants was disrupting his country's "security balance".
