At least 35 migrants have died crossing Niger’s desert toward Libya or Algeria so far this year, according to
Algeria’s army will not join the 2025 African Lion exercises due to their location in Morocco and Israel’s participation, two U.S. AFRICOM officers said. The drills, involving Tunisia, Ghana, and Senegal, run until May 23. Algeria, which hasn’t officially commented, was invited but declined. "It’s their sovereign right," the officers said, expressing hope for future involvement. Morocco’s hosting and Israel’s Golani Brigade likely drove Algeria’s boycott.
