Algeria’s solar ambitions are undergoing a transformation as two major tenders for 3 GW of solar capacity aim to reshape its energy landscape, according to an extensive report in the trade publication, PV magazine. Historically limited to small, remote installations, solar power in Algeria could expand significantly, supported by policies encouraging domestic manufacturing and job creation.
By the end of 2023, Algeria’s solar capacity reached 437 MW, a modest figure compared to its vast solar potential. New tenders, however, include provisions for local content, allowing companies like Zergoun and others to gain a 25% cost bonus for using Algerian-made materials. This initiative is expected to create 12,000 jobs, and could help establish Algeria as a renewable energy hub.
The shift is part of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s strategy to diversify Algeria’s energy portfolio away from its traditional reliance on hydrocarbons. By 2035, Algeria aims for 15 GW in renewable capacity. According to PV magazine, the country also plans to develop green hydrogen, in a bid to position itself as a future energy supplier to Europe.
