AU urges immediate 'halt' to fighting in northern Ethiopia

The African Union expressed deep concern on Friday regarding the "escalating tensions between local communities" in a contested area of northern Ethiopia, urging all parties involved to immediately cease hostilities.

According to the UN, clashes in Alamata Town, Raya Alamata, Zata, and Ofla have resulted in the displacement of over 50,000 individuals this month. These areas are part of a disputed territory claimed by both Tigray and neighboring Amhara regions.

In a statement, AU Commission chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat emphasized the importance of halting hostilities promptly and ensuring the safety of civilians to prevent further displacement of the local population.
