The Czech parliament has approved the return of troops to the Sahel, as part of a NATO program to help train the Mauritanian military. Thirty Czech special forces personnel will participate in the two-year mandate. Jan Jireš, Senior Director of the Defense Policy and Strategy Section of the Czech Ministry of Defense, explained the reasoning behind the country’s involvement: “A number of security threats, such as terrorism and illegal migration, are emerging [in the Sahel].”
