The Dominican Republic recently announced plans to open a consulate in Western Sahara’s main city Dakhla, according to a report by Morocco World News.
The announcement comes a week after Chad opened a consulate there joining a growing number of African and Arab nations who have established diplomatic outlets in the area. It’s a sign of the growing support for Morocco’s claims to the disputed territory.
Morocco considers Western Sahara its own territory, but the Algeria-backed Polisario Front wants to establish its own state there.
The Dominican Foreign Ministry reportedly stated that President Luis Abinader is committed to supporting Morocco’s sovereignty over the disputed territory.
So far, 29 countries have established consulates in the region’s key cities, Layoune and Dakhla, according to Morocco World News.
President Abinader has reportedly been invited to visit Morocco to bolster cooperation in trade, investment, and tourism.
