The Council of Ministers of the Economic Community of West African
States (ECOWAS) held an Extraordinary Session in Accra on
Wednesday to discuss the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and
Niger (AES) from the regional bloc. ECOWAS is to outline the
practical steps of the AES withdrawal through legal, operational, and
diplomatic options including the ending of ongoing programs and the
administrative relocation of institutions. Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign
Affairs and Chair of the Council, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar,
presided over the session, saying: “It was never our wish to
deliberate on the withdrawal of member states, but we must now
chart a forward-looking path.”
