Egypt has denounced Israel’s recent airstrikes in southern Syria and Lebanon, calling them a clear violation of international law and the sovereignty of two Arab nations.
In a statement, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said the attacks “represent a blatant violation of the sovereignty of the two brotherly Arab countries and a breach of international law and relevant UN resolutions.”
Over the weekend, Israeli forces struck Syrian military positions in the southern town of Sweida, home to Syria’s Druze community. According to the Jerusalem Post, the strikes followed attacks on the Druze by forces loyal to the Syrian government. Israel has pledged to protect the Druze population in the region.
On Tuesday, Israel also carried out airstrikes in Lebanon aimed at deterring Hezbollah. Reuters reports that the strike killed 12 people, including five Hezbollah fighters.
Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz warned that Israel “will respond with maximum force to any attempt at rebuilding.”
Israel and Lebanon signed a U.S.-brokered ceasefire agreement last November.
