Egypt has decided not to appoint a new ambassador to Israel until the war in Gaza comes to an end, former Israeli ambassador to Egypt Amira Oron told Haaretz on Sunday.
Egypt is also withholding formal recognition of Israel’s new ambassador to Cairo, Uri Rothman. Egyptian authorities have declined to sign the official “letter of credence,” which is required for new diplomatic appointments to be formally acknowledged.

Egypt, which has historically acted as a mediator in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, has voiced strong opposition to any post-war plans that involve the displacement of Palestinians. Cairo fears such moves could further destabilize the region and escalate the conflict.
Despite rising tensions and growing public concern in Egypt over Israeli military actions in Gaza, Oron noted that diplomatic communication between the two nations remains intact.
