Egypt on Thursday rejected Ethiopia's "unilateral" moves over its $4-billion Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) after Addis Ababa declared construction complete, with inauguration set for September. The 1.8-km-wide, 145-metre-tall dam, Africa's largest hydroelectric project, is key to Ethiopia's development but has long raised Egyptian and Sudanese concerns over water supplies. Egypt's water minister, Hani Sewilam, accused Ethiopia of imposing a "fait accompli" and evading negotiations. Ethiopia’s PM Abiy Ahmed said the dam was ready for inauguration.
