Egypt rent law repeal puts 6 million at risk of eviction as rents soar

Egypt’s parliament has repealed a decades-old rent law, putting nearly six million residents at risk of eviction as rents rise sharply over the next seven years. Tenants in Cairo and Alexandria, some paying as little as $30 a year, could face monthly rents of $300. Urban experts warn the change will drive many into informal housing, while landlords in prime areas say the reform finally addresses long-standing income disparities.
