Egypt to pay $627m in export arrears from August

Egypt’s Ministry of Finance will begin disbursing half of overdue export payments starting 7 August, Egypt Today reports. The total payout, equivalent to around $627 million (LE 30 billion), will be made in cash over four years, benefiting some 2,400 exporters through four state banks. A clearing mechanism will settle the remaining arrears by offsetting exporters’ debts to state agencies, from taxes to utilities.

Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk said the program aims to strengthen exporters’ liquidity and competitiveness. The payout is part of a broader push to support Egypt’s trade sector, including a newly restructured export rebate scheme for 2025/26 with a doubled budget of about $940 million (LE 45 billion). Of that, $793 million will go to priority sectors, while $146 million is reserved for strategic uses such as high-potential products and performance incentives.

The ministry hopes these measures will accelerate payments, encourage growth, and modernize Egypt’s export ecosystem amid broader economic reforms.
