Egypt will activate its first nuclear reactor at the El-Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant in late 2028, with the remaining three units scheduled for completion by 2029, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly announced during a site visit, according to Egypt Today. The 4,800-megawatt facility is being developed in partnership with Russia and will be operated solely by Egyptian staff.

Construction began in 2017 following agreements signed in 2015. Nuclear Power Plants Authority Chairman Sherif Helmy said the project is on track, with no delays reported. The plant is being built to international safety standards, and Egyptians currently make up about 80% of the workforce. Several key components are also being produced domestically.

Madbouly emphasized that the project, long stalled on paper, is now central to Egypt’s energy and industrial strategy. The plant is expected to help diversify Egypt’s power mix and strengthen the country's technical capacity in nuclear energy.
