Egypt to store more renewable power in new battery plants

Egypt has announced plans for two stand-alone battery storage plants with a combined capacity of 1,500 MWh to store renewable energy and stabilise the national grid, reports Daily News Egypt. Located in Aswan and the Red Sea governorates, the facilities will help manage peak demand, reduce carbon emissions and integrate more solar and wind power into the electricity mix.
The projects are part of a broader strategy to lift renewables to 42% of Egypt’s energy mix by 2030 and 65% by 2040. They follow recent progress on major clean power schemes, including the 1,000 MW Abydos 2 solar plant paired with 600 MWh of storage in Aswan, and the 500 MW Amont 2 wind project at Ras Shukeir.
Energy Minister Mahmoud Esmat said battery storage is critical to grid stability as renewables expand, while private-sector participation—led by AMEA Power of the UAE—remains central. A 300 MWh storage facility in Aswan is already operational, with more capacity planned
