Egypt has announced plans for a new desert city west of Cairo named Jirian, part of a sweeping agricultural megaproject aimed at reclaiming 2.5 million acres of land, AFP reports. The city will feature a man-made Nile canal, luxury housing, and industrial zones. Officials say the project will create 250,000 jobs, though critics cite mounting debt, now over $155 billion, as a concern. Construction is expected to finish within five years.
