EU, Morocco to deepen migration cooperation

The European Commission is in talks with Morocco to formalize a new partnership on migration management and border control, EU officials say, according to Moroccan media. The potential agreement would mirror existing deals with Tunisia, Egypt, and Jordan, exchanging financial and technical aid for stricter border enforcement and cooperation on curbing irregular migration.

Dubravka Šuica, the EU Commissioner for Democracy and Demography, highlighted Morocco as a priority partner under the EU’s Global Europe instrument, which aims to double aid to North African countries. While discussions are still in early stages, the proposed agreement reflects the EU’s broader strategy to stabilize its southern neighborhood and reduce migration flows across the Mediterranean.

Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita met in Brussels with Kaja Kallas, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, to reaffirm the strength of the Morocco–EU strategic partnership. They emphasized joint efforts on security, climate, and regional stability, particularly in the Sahel and Mediterranean, amid heightened geopolitical uncertainty.
