The European Parliament voted on Wednesday to include Algeria on the European Union’s list of jurisdictions considered high-risk for money laundering and the financing of terrorism. The decision imposes stricter oversight on financial transactions involving Algerian entities within the EU. French MEP Laurence Trochu, a member of the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) group, wrote on X that “adding Algeria reflects our commitment to consistency and rigor in fighting opaque financial practices that threaten international stability.” It comes amid concerns over Algeria’s financial oversight gaps and alleged links to the Polisario Front. The changes to the list are still pending approval from EU member states and the European Parliament, likely within the next month.
