Sergey Surovikin, the Russian general once dubbed “General Armageddon” for his role in Syria and Ukraine, has re-emerged in Algeria after months out of public view, according to several pro-Kremlin military bloggers. Surovkin was dismissed as head of Russia’s air forces and commander of Russian forces in Ukraine in August 2023 following his alleged ties to the Wagner Group’s failed mutiny. The independent Astra news site, cited Lt. Gen. Viktor Sobolev, a member of Russia’s State Duma Defense Committee, saying Surovikin has been working as military adviser in Africa.

Surovkin was recently photographed in Algeria during Victory Day commemorations, appearing alongside Russian officials and the newly appointed ambassador, Alexei Solomatin. Reports from Africa Intelligence suggest Surovikin has been acting as an informal envoy in Algiers, pending formal diplomatic appointments. His presence underscores Moscow’s ongoing efforts to maintain influence in Africa, even as it distances itself from Wagner’s legacy. The Kremlin has not officially commented on Surovikin’s current role.
