France to expel Algerian diplomats in tit-for-tat move

France will expel Algerian diplomats after Algiers announced plans to send more French officials home, Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said Wednesday, calling ties "totally blocked." The decision, deemed "perfectly proportionate," follows Algeria's "unjustified" move, he told BFMTV. Relations have soured in recent months. On Monday, Barrot vowed a firm response after Algeria summoned France’s envoy over expulsions. A French diplomatic source said affected officials were on temporary missions but gave no further details.
