In a recent report by the GCRP “Populations at Risk” it highlighted the recurrent violence committed by armed Islamist groups, as well as security operations to confront them, which threatened the populations in the Central Sahel – Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger – with violations that may amount to crimes against humanity and war crimes. The report went on to state “populations continue to be targeted and persecuted on the basis of their ethnic and/or religious identity.” Since the withdrawal of UN peacekeeping operation MINUSMA it is hard for international groups to monitor potential violations
