More than 5,000 migrants from Libya have landed on Crete and Gavdos since June, prompting EU chief Ursula von der Leyen to send her migration commissioner to the region. The arrivals coincide with a Turkey-Libya deal to launch seismic energy surveys south of Crete, raising tensions with Greece. Athens suspects Libya is using migration pressure over Greece’s plans to license offshore energy exploration, an area eyed by Chevron. An EU diplomat said Libya may be weaponising migration with Ankara. Migrant arrivals from Libya to Greece have surged sharply.
