Greece to suspend asylum hearings for migrants from North Africa

Greece will halt all asylum hearings for migrants arriving by boat from North Africa for three months, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Wednesday, following a surge in arrivals from Libya. The move comes after over 2,000 migrants landed on Crete, angering local officials and tourism operators. The measure, set for a vote, aims to deter smugglers. Greece had sought cooperation with Libyan authorities but failed. Another 520 migrants were rescued near Crete early Wednesday and will be taken to Athens, the coastguard said.
