A Hamas delegation will travel to Cairo on Saturday for discussions with Egyptian officials about a potential Gaza ceasefire and a prisoner exchange, a Hamas official told AFP. The talks follow a recent ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, a Hamas ally.

The United States has also initiated diplomatic efforts with Qatar, Turkey, and Egypt to broker a truce and secure the release of hostages taken during Hamas's October 7 attacks on Israel, which left 1,207 dead, mostly civilians.

Israel's military response has resulted in 44,363 deaths in Gaza, according to the territory's health ministry, figures deemed reliable by the United Nations. Hamas released about 100 hostages in a November ceasefire in exchange for 240 Palestinian prisoners held by Israel. Efforts to establish a new truce and hostage release have yet to succeed, despite repeated mediation attempts by the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt.
