The International Criminal Court (ICC) has unsealed a warrant for Saif Suleiman Sneidel, a Libyan militia officer accused of war crimes including murder, torture and “outrages upon personal dignity,” reports AFP. Prosecutors allege Sneidel took part in three executions in Benghazi and surrounding areas between June 2016 and July 2017, killing 23 people. The warrant, issued in November 2020, was initially kept secret to maximise chances of arrest.

Sneidel is said to have held a leadership role in Group 50, a sub-unit of the Al-Saiqa Brigade, alongside its late commander Mahmoud Al-Werfalli — himself twice indicted by the ICC before being killed. Deputy prosecutor Nazhat Shameem Khan said unsealing the warrant would allow engagement with states, the UN Security Council and others to secure Sneidel’s arrest.

The ICC has investigated crimes in Libya since 2011, following a UN Security Council referral. German authorities last month arrested another Libyan suspect, Khaled Mohamed Ali El Hishri, on war crimes and crimes against humanity charges.
