Water is a contentious issue and in what appears to be the latest episode of Algeria’s ongoing hostile campaign against Morocco, the Algerian Minister of Irrigation, Taha Derbal, has accused the Kingdom of deliberately draining water from dams and regions along Algeria’s western border. Speaking on the sidelines of the 10th World Water Forum in Bali, Indonesia, the Algerian minister, without directly naming Morocco, alleged that the neighboring country is systematically and intentionally drying up certain dams and zones. During the forum, Derbal boycotted the speech of the Moroccan Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, and the awarding of the 8th Hassan II Great World Water Prize to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
