Jewish store owner hospitalized after axe attack in Tunisia’s Djerba

A 50-year-old Jewish jewelry store owner was hospitalized Thursday after an axe attack on Tunisia’s Djerba island, home to Africa’s oldest synagogue, community leader Rene Trabelsi told AP. The attack comes a week before Jewish pilgrims gather for Lag B’Omer festivities at the 26-century-old El-Ghriba synagogue. Trabelsi said the motive was unclear but trusted authorities to investigate. The victim, with defensive wounds, is expected to be released Friday. Security has been tightened.
