Lawmakers from Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal and The Gambia have formed a new parliamentary alliance aimed at strengthening regional integration and stability in West Africa, officials said after a ceremony in Dakar on Monday. The move marks a shift in African parliamentary work towards diplomacy and regional development, they added. Morocco’s Abdelmadjid El Fassi-Fihri attended, as did Mauritania’s parliamentary president Mohamed Bamba Meguett. Algeria was notably absent, raising questions after its parliamentary head visited Mauritania last week without issuing a joint statement.
