Why the UN still matters across the Maghreb

Unknown attackers shot dead Libyan General Ali Ramadan al-Rayani at his home in southern Tripoli Sunday, AFP reports. The murder prompted condemnation from Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah, head of Libya’s UN-recognised Government of National Unity.
Authorities have yet to determine the motive, but Dbeibah has ordered an urgent investigation. According to local media outlet Al-Wasat, Rayani killed three attackers before being fatally shot. The killing highlights ongoing instability in Libya, which remains divided between rival administrations in Tripoli and in the east, led by strongman Khalifa Haftar.
The attack follows other recent violence targeting senior figures, including a March assassination attempt on Libya’s cabinet affairs minister. Libya has struggled with political instability since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that ousted Muammar Gaddafi, with ongoing political fragmentation and insecurity undermining governance.
