Mauritania is poised to advance the resumption of diplomatic relations with Israel during a White House meeting brokered by President Donald Trump on Wednesday, a source familiar with the plans told Semafor.
Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Ghazouani will meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu alongside a U.S.-Africa summit with leaders from Gabon, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, and Senegal. Mauritania, an Arab League member, cut ties with Israel in 2010 over the Gaza war.
The Trump administration has pushed for normalized Israel-Africa relations. Nine African nations still do not recognize or have suspended ties with Israel. The White House, State Department, and Mauritanian embassy did not respond to requests for comment.
