New data from the Spanish National Security Department (DSN) has revealed that Mauritania was the main country of departure for migrants headed to the Spanish coasts. Mauritania accounted for around 25,000 departures – roughly equal to the combined number from Morocco and Algeria over the same period. The DSN also warned that migratory pressure could increase due to instability in the Sahel region.
