Mauritanian troops intercepted dozens of Polisario fighters attempting to enter illegally on Monday, a security source said. The armed group, in civilian clothes and using Mauritanian-plated vehicles, aimed to attack military or civilian targets near the Sand Wall, the source said. A military drone tracked the convoy, forcing it back toward Algeria’s Tindouf camps. The incident follows Mauritania’s rejection of a Polisario request to reopen the Lebriga border zone. Nouakchott has bolstered border security with Chinese-made drones, with EU pledging further support.
