Mauritania’s ex-President Aziz gets 15 years in prison after appeal

A Mauritanian court on Wednesday sentenced former President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz to 15 years in prison for corruption, upholding charges of economic crimes and abuse of power. The ruling followed appeals by both prosecutors—who sought a harsher penalty—and Aziz’s defense, which argued only a special court could try him. Aziz, who took power in a 2008 coup and ruled for a decade, denies wrongdoing. His initial 2023 five-year term was increased on appeal.
