A Moroccan court has reduced the prison sentence of 82-year-old opposition figure and former human rights minister Mohamed Ziane from five to three years, his lawyer told AFP. Ziane, already serving a separate three-year term since 2022, was convicted of embezzlement and misuse of public funds linked to his party’s 2015 campaign financing.

The former head of the Rabat bar association and founder of the Moroccan Liberal Party has denied wrongdoing, claiming his prosecution is politically motivated. His lawyer said the reduced sentence remains excessive and that Ziane should be acquitted entirely.

It is still unclear whether the two sentences will run concurrently. Ziane has become an outspoken critic of Moroccan authorities, particularly the intelligence services. His initial conviction stemmed from a complaint by the interior ministry, which included charges ranging from contempt of public officials to defamation and sexual misconduct.
