Moroccan Town Rallies Against Water Management Proposals

Moroccan Town Rallies Against Water Management Proposals

Regional and local leaders in eastern Morocco met this week with residents and civil society groups after months of protests over a water management plan set to take effect later this year.

Protestors in the town of Figuig, who have been active since November, are challenging a move to shift control of drinking water from local to regional authorities as part of the 2020 "National Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation Program".

This initiave aims to enhance infrastructure, improve efficiency, and promote conservation in response to environmental challenges such as climate change and water scarcity.
