Morocco and Mauritania have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation on sustainable fisheries management, signing a landmark declaration during a meeting in Dakhla, according to Moroccan media. The deal focuses on preserving Atlantic coastal fish stocks—particularly small pelagic species—seen as vital for regional food security and ecological balance. The agreement builds on prior frameworks, including a 2022 maritime accord and the 2025 Agadir declaration.

A joint committee will oversee coordinated management, share scientific data, and align regulations with UN and FAO principles. Both sides pledged to improve fisheries research collaboration and establish shared monitoring systems. Industry leaders hailed the move as a shift from vision to action, emphasizing the need for long-term stewardship of shared marine resources.

The deal highlights growing regional momentum toward sustainable ocean governance and reflects Morocco and Mauritania’s joint commitment to climate resilience, coastal development, and responsible fishing practices.
