Morocco is reportedly considering acquiring U.S. F‑35 Lightning II stealth fighters in response to Algeria’s recent purchase of Russian Su‑57s, according to Defence News Aerospace.

The move would mark Africa’s first F‑35 deal and significantly recalibrate North Africa’s military balance. Morocco and Algeria have long been at odds, especially over Western Sahara, with diplomatic ties broken since 2021.

While Algeria’s twin-engine Su‑57 offers impressive thrust-vectoring, supercruise and a 1,500 km combat radius, the single-engine F‑35 delivers superior sensor fusion, stealth, electronic warfare, real-time connectivity, and global interoperability. It also benefits from a well-established logistics and software support network.

Equipping Morocco with the F‑35 would counter Algeria’s capability leap, enhance Moroccan airpower, strengthen ties with the U.S. and Israel, and reinforce Rabat’s strategic deterrence.
