Morocco launches $2 billion EV battery gigafactory

Morocco joined the global EV supply chain on Tuesday as COBCO opened a 20-billion-dirham ($2 billion) gigafactory in Jorf Lasfar, marking its shift into green tech. The 238-hectare plant, a joint venture between Morocco’s Al Mada and China’s CNGR, is the first of its kind outside Asia. It will produce 120,000 tons of battery precursors yearly, plus LFP cathodes and recycled materials, cementing Morocco as a regional clean-energy hub.
