Morocco – Spain to revive plans for $6 billion rail tunnel under Strait of Gibraltar

According to reports in the Spanish media Morocco and Spain are in discussions to revive a plan to build a rail tunnel just in time for the 2030 World Cup. The project has remained dormant since 2009 but has gained new momentum following recent high-level meetings between the two countries. The project would involve constructing two 28-kilometer-long submarine tunnels, reaching a maximum depth of 475 meters, connecting Punta Paloma in Spain with Malabata in northern Morocco.
