Why the Maghreb matters to the world’s oceans
North-West African states have a growing role to play in ocean governance—and global frameworks should reflect it. As diplomats
Morocco’s General Directorate for National Security (DGSN) marked its 69th anniversary on May 16 with a ceremony at the Mohammed VI Exhibition Centre in El Jadida, ahead of a five-day public exhibition. The event drew senior Moroccan officials, foreign dignitaries, and Interpol President Ahmed Naser Al-Raisi, who praised Morocco’s expanding role in international policing and regional security.
DGSN chief Abdellatif Hammouchi received an honorary medal from the Council of Arab Interior Ministers, as the Kingdom prepares to host Interpol’s 93rd General Assembly in Marrakech later this year.
The ceremony featured choreographed demonstrations of crowd-control tactics, mounted patrols, and self-defence drills. The displays are part of the “Open Days” initiative—now in its sixth edition—designed to portray Morocco’s police as modern and accessible. The exhibition forms part of a broader effort to build public trust in the security services while projecting the state’s institutional strength.
