Why the Maghreb matters to the world’s oceans
North-West African states have a growing role to play in ocean governance—and global frameworks should reflect it. As diplomats
The head of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has said that the ongoing war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces has pushed Sudan to the edge of famine. Both warring factions have been accused of weaponizing hunger and impeding the flow of humanitarian aid since the conflict broke out in April 2023. NRC chief Jan Egeland told AFP “We have the biggest humanitarian crisis on the planet in Sudan, the biggest hunger crisis, the biggest displacement crisis... and the world is giving it a shrug.” The United Nations says that nearly 26 million people inside Sudan are suffering acute hunger.
