Pope Leo XIV met Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune at the Vatican Thursday to discuss Church life in Algeria and the role of interfaith dialogue in promoting peace, according to ACI MENA. Tebboune also held talks with top Vatican officials, including Cardinal Pietro Parolin, amid a broader push to deepen cultural and diplomatic ties.

The visit coincided with an Algerian-Italian business forum in Rome, which yielded 30 new trade agreements. Tebboune and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also announced joint efforts to seek UNESCO World Heritage recognition for sites associated with St. Augustine—highlighting shared Mediterranean heritage.

The meeting follows recent speculation that Pope Leo XIV may include Algeria in his first papal trip, given his Augustinian roots and the significance of St. Augustine’s legacy in the North African country. The Vatican has not confirmed any travel plans.
