According to U.S. news outlet Axios senior Israeli intelligence and military officials met Wednesday in Cairo with Egypt's intelligence chief and other key officials to discuss a possible Israel Defense Forces operation in Rafah. Any operation in the southern Gaza city would lead to tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians entering Egypt, via a mass crossing at the border that would endanger its security. Senior Egyptian officials have said in public and in closed talks with Israel that such a situation would lead to a breakdown in relations with Israel and could even place the peace agreement between the countries in peril.
