Spain's Ministry of the Interior has revealed that the number of arrivals in the Canary Islands has almost halved, since the beginning of 2025, InfoMigrants reports. It comes as cooperation between Spain and Mauritania has significantly increased, on how best to manage the flow of migrants. Spain and the EU have signed multiple agreements with the West African nation to stem the flow of migrants and combat smuggling and trafficking organizations operating in Mauritania. Human rights groups however have criticized the Mauritanian government of misappropriation of EU funds and the use of heavy-handed tactics against migrants, especially those from Mali.
