Sports spat widens as Algeria withdraws team from gymnastics championship in Marrakech

Algeria has announced it will withdraw its team from the African Artistic Gymnastics Championship set to take place April 30 -May 7 in Marrakech, according to regional media. The withdrawal represents a widening of the sports dispute between Algeria and Morocco.

A message from the president of the Algerian Gymnastics Federation reportedly gave the explanation that Algeria’s Ministry of Youth and Sports had not approved the team’s request to participate in the championship, a qualifying event for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The dispute kicked off last week when Algerian authorities confiscated the official jerseys of visiting Moroccan football team RS Berkane, because they feature a map of Morocco including the disputed region of Western Sahara. The confiscation led to RS Berkane refusing to play in the semi-final of the African Confederation Cup against USM Algiers. A few days later the Algerian U-20 handball team withdrew from the Arab Championship in Rabat, in alleged response to the Moroccan team wearing jerseys featuring a similar map of the kingdom.
