Sudan's agriculture minister, Abubakr al-Bushra, dismissed claims of famine in the country, questioning UN-backed data that 755,000 people face catastrophic hunger. Speaking in Port Sudan, he rejected the notion of aid agencies bypassing cross-border delivery restrictions. Since war erupted between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, Sudan has faced the world’s worst hunger crisis, with vast regions under paramilitary control. Al-Bushra emphasized that 755,000 people is a small fraction of the total population.
