Tunisia bans fixed-term contracts to protect workers

Tunisia’s parliament on Wednesday abolished fixed-term and subcontractor agreements, backing President Kais Saied’s push to safeguard workers—a move economists warn may hurt the economy. Seasonal and temporary roles are exempt in a nation reliant on informal labor, especially farming. Parliament Speaker Brahim Bouderbala called it a step toward "human dignity and decent work." Violators face fines or jail for repeat offenses, and subcontractors like cleaners will become permanent staff. Experts say the law may not curb job insecurity or boost growth.
