A Tunisian court sentenced former prime minister Ali Laarayedh to 34 years in prison on terrorism charges Friday for allegedly facilitating the travel of jihadist fighters to Iraq and Syria, AFP reported, citing local media. Laarayedh, a senior figure in the Islamist Ennahdha party and a vocal critic of President Kais Saied, was arrested in December 2022. He denies the charges, calling the case politically motivated.

Two former security officials were also sentenced to 26 years, with others receiving terms of up to 36 years. The verdicts mark the latest in a series of prosecutions targeting Saied’s opponents amid growing concern over the country’s authoritarian turn.
Laarayedh served as prime minister in the post-Arab Spring government following the 2011 uprising. The UN estimates that around 5,500 Tunisians joined jihadist groups abroad between 2011 and 2016.
